On May 4, Kurbads honors Latvian history through the story of Namejs.
This year, on May 4 - the Restoration of Independence Day of the Republic of Latvia - one of leading European vehicle transportation and logistics company Kurbads, marks the occasion with a special tribute, sharing the story behind the consecration of the company’s 120th car carrier, which bears the name of the legendary Semigallian ruler and freedom fighter Namejs.
In the video story, historian Normunds Jērums takes viewers back to 13th-century Latvia, exploring the legendary life, battles, and victories of Namejs, the leader of the Semigallians of Tērvete. In 1279, after successful battles, he helped liberate nearly all of Zemgale from German rule. Namejs became a historical figure shrouded in legend, symbolizing the Latvian people’s desire for independence, freedom, unity, and faith in themselves and their homeland.
His name is also connected to the origins of the traditional Namejs ring. Its intertwined design symbolizes unity, friendship, and resilience, and today it has become a recognizable sign of Latvian identity around the world. The story of Namejs has also been immortalized in art and literature, including the 2018 film Nameja gredzens.
Many of the drivers at leading European vehicle transportation and logistics company Kurbads have travelled more than one million kilometres across Europe’s major highways - including the experienced family crew of Renārs and Sigita Jakobsons. Renārs is a true Kurbads driver champion, having now received his fourth car carrier. All of his previous trucks have surpassed the one-million-kilometre mark, demonstrating the professionalism and dedication of the experienced driver. Together with his wife Sigita, he began working at Kurbads in 2015 on car carrier T71, marking the couple’s second consecration ceremony together.
Working on Europe’s roads requires not only technical skill but also a high level of responsibility, precise planning, and constant concentration. For Renārs and Sigita, living and working together makes the journey easier - a model built on trust, partnership, and shared dedication. It is the energy and passion of employees like them that have helped Kurbads become one of Latvia’s largest logistics companies and a recognizable symbol of Latvia on European roads, further distinguished by the striking truck cabin artwork created by artist and graphic designer Alfreds Paulausks.
