Kārlis Skrastiņš – The Ironman and Latvian Hockey Legend #121

Kārlis Skrastiņš is one of the most outstanding Latvian hockey players ever. He served as the national team captain for many years and was widely known in the NHL by his nickname “Ironman.” He was a defenseman with a strong character, strict discipline, and unwavering principles. Born on July 9, 1974, in Riga, he tragically passed away on September 7, 2011, in Yaroslavl.
During his career, Skrastiņš played 832 games in the National Hockey League for the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, and Dallas Stars. Representing Latvia, he participated in three Olympic Games and nine World Championships, playing 151 games for the national team. He was one of the team's most reliable pillars and a true leader.

Continuing the tradition of honoring people whose work and attitude serve as examples, the transport and logistics company Kurbads has dedicated its newest fleet car carrier, #121, to Kārlis Skrastiņš. This tradition is part of the company's long-term vision – to keep alive the stories of personalities who have left a lasting mark on Latvian culture and sports.
On February 8, 2007, Skrastiņš made history by becoming the NHL defenseman with the most extended consecutive games streak – 495 games. The streak began on February 21, 2000, and lasted until February 25, 2007. With this achievement, he broke Tim Horton’s record and secured his place among the most outstanding players in league history.

The truck’s visual design was created with artist Alfreds Paulausks, highlighting the iconic number 37, which Skrastiņš wore in the NHL. This visual element is a simple but powerful symbol connecting his sporting legacy and values. The inauguration ritual was attended by Kārlis’ brother Atis Skrastiņš, HS Kurbads coaches, and company employees. The atmosphere of the event was enriched by the folk group “Brička” from Ķekava, whose songs and traditional Latvian rituals added warmth and symbolic depth to the occasion.
Kurbads has a long and close connection to hockey - the company founded and continues to develop the HS Kurbads hockey system and actively operates the ice hall, where young athletes train and local and international-level tournaments are held. This vehicle dedication is not only a tribute to Kārlis Skrastiņš but also a natural continuation of Kurbads’ enduring mission to support and promote hockey development in Latvia.
